I remember reading once that the ancient Celts, with whom the custom of Halloween originated, used to carve turnips and lay a piece of burning coal to light it from within while it lay on their doorsteps as a beacon to welcome the souls of loved ones. Pumpkins were discovered in America hundreds of years later and adopted as a much handier tool for getting creative with the carving knife.

Pumpkins and Halloween are inseparable elements in my house. The evening before Halloween is specially set aside to carving up a couple of jack-o-lanterns and every year when the kids were home they would try out new designs, often stenciling in intricate designs – and wasting quite a few pumpkins in the process!

On a practical level, I have a specialty recipe for “Jack-o-lantern frosties” – a special yogurt-based drink I would whip up with the insides of all the pumpkins used in the pre-Halloween artistic endeavors.
“When black cats prowl and pumpkins gleam, May luck be yours on Halloween!”
