Video games! Call me old-fashioned but I think any “game” which involves hysterically shooting your enemy till he literally shatters in a mass of blood, flesh and bone or else measures your “skills” in stealing cars and killing cops and making a quick getaway is really not the right thing for any child – or even grown-up for that matter – even if the action takes place on a computer screen.

I’ve often told my daughter that she shouldn’t allow her son access to these violent games and I know she does try to supervise it but I’m pretty sure she is not very successful at it. She told me that though she tried to password protect the PC, her fifteen year old Tommy was a computer expert who could almost hack his way through anything.

In a way I sort of sympathize with her. Once when I was sleeping over during one of her business trips, I caught Tommy opening up his secret box of games hidden in his closet.

When I tried to remonstrate with him, he tried to argue that the modern world was comparatively less violent in real terms than say, the medieval world of knights where you could get embroiled in a swordfight or knocked off your horse or be called into compulsory military service at any moment. As a result, modern men had apparently no outlet for natural aggressive instincts and video games filled the void by providing a relatively harmless avenue for this. What a piece of eloquently argued sophistry!

On the other hand, maybe video games are practice for developing good hand-eye coordination. But yes, the violence does seem a bit much.
